Chapter 02: Knowledge Management

Easterby-Smith, M. and Lyles, M.A. (2011) “The evolving field of organizational learning and knowledge management”, in Easterby-Smith, M. and Lyles, M.A. (Editors), (2011) Handbook of Organizational Learning and Knowledge Management, Blackwell Publishing, Hong Kong, pp 1–22.

This book provides an overview of the field.

Yang, B., Zheng, W., and Viere, C. (2009) “Holistic views of knowledge management models”, Advances in Developing Human Resources, vol. 11:3, pp. 273–289.

This article presents an alternative to KM models that define knowledge from conceptual and perceptual perspectives, by recognizing affectual knowledge such as values and visions. It identifies the multidimensional nature of the knowledge dynamics between individuals and organizations.

Spender, J.C. and Scherer, A.G. (2007) “The philosophical foundations of knowledge management: Editors’ Introduction”, Organization, vol. 14:1, pp. 5–28.

The article summarises the variety of approaches in the KM literature at the time, to expose solid underpinnings against which the field's development might be gauged. It aimed to clarify whether these would be axiomatic principles that defined the field or a set of professionally accepted KM practices.

Hazlett, S-A., McAdam, R., and Gallagher, S. (2005) “Theory building in knowledge management: in search of paradigms”, Journal of Management Inquiry, vol. 14:1, pp. 31–42.

This article examines an apparent dichotomy between those researchers from an information systems background and those from a management background. It proposes that KM is currently in a state of "pre-science," (in 2005) wherein proponents of different paradigms have their own beliefs and values and often disagree with others about fundamentals within the field.

Gold, A.H., Malhotra, A., and Segars, A.H. (2001) “Knowledge management: an organizational capabilities perspective”, Journal of Management Information Systems, vol. 18:1, pp. 185–214 (please note this content is behind a paywall).

This is a widely cited source which looks at knowledge management as a capability.

This book provides an alternative and contemporary perspective.
