Wahab, S., & Olson, L. (2004). Intimate partner violence and sexual assault in Native American communities. Trauma, Violence, & Abuse, 5(4), 353-366.

Abstract: Previous studies indicate that Native American women experience the highest rate of violence of any ethnic or racial group in the United States. This article addresses the prevalence of intimate partner violence and sexual assault among Native Americans.

Questions to Consider:

1. Discuss two of the key points of the research review.

2. Discuss the treatment of Native Americans by colonizers, racism, exploitation of resources, seizure of lands, introduction of alcohol, and diseases that have profoundly negatively affected the values and lives of indigenous peoples.

Alderden, M. A., & Ullman, S. E. (2012). Creating a more complete and current picture: Examining police and prosecutor decision-making when processing sexual assault cases. Violence Against Women, 18(5), 525-55.

Abstract: This study sought to identify factors that predicted outcomes for sexual assault cases involving female victims across several decision-making points and to compare these findings to prior studies. The results indicate that there continues to be a high attrition rate in the handling of sexual assault cases.

Questions to Consider:

1. Discuss the impact of police discretion and decision making in criminal justice cases.

2. Discuss the impact of prosecutorial discretion and decision making as it relates to criminal justice cases.
