Bender, K. A., Thompson, S. J., Ferguson, K. M., Yoder, J. R., & Kern, L. (2014). Trauma among street-involved youth. Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, 22(1), 53-64.

Abstract: Previous research documents that street-involved youth experience rates of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that are significantly higher than their housed counterparts. Trauma and PTSD are of particular concern for homeless youth as they can negatively affect youths’ ability to function adaptively and to transition off the streets.

Questions to Consider:

1. How was the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire used in the study?

2. What were the results of the study as it related to trauma and PTSD?

McLaughlin, M. J., Leone, P. E., Meisel, S., & Henderson, K. (1997). Strengthen school and community capacity. Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, 5(1), 15-23.

Abstract: Creating capacity in schools and communities promotes academic, social, and emotional competence for all students, including those with serious emotional disturbance as well as those with incipient or identified emotional or behavioral disorders. Capacity building in school settings is a multifaceted systemic process implemented through a flexible continuum of school-based primary prevention, early intervention, and intensive intervention services.

Questions to Consider:

1. Why has public concern about the consequences of behavioral disruption and especially problems of youth violence in schools and communities received heightened attention?

2. What does positive school model mean?
