Lesson Plans

Teaching Early Numeracy to Children with Developmental Disabilities is supported by a comprehensive set of over 90 lesson plans for you to download, print and use in the classroom. These have been adapted from classic ‘green book’ Mathematics Recovery material for specific use with children with developmental disabilities. The lesson plans are split into three main categories covering the emergent, perceptual and figurative phases of mathematical development. Each phase of mathematical development includes six key topics that fall into one of the following three strands: number words and numerals, counting and grouping.

All lesson plans follow the same structure. The materials section describes the teaching resources required to deliver a lesson. The teaching procedure section summarises some recommendations for how best to teach a skill. The generalization plan section provides examples of teaching strategies for encouraging maintenance and generalization. Finally, the help that may be provided section, provides examples of different teaching supports that may be helpful if a student is struggling to learn a skill.

Prerequisite skill lesson plans also provide suggestions for how to teach crucial readiness skills such as attending, imitation and matching.
