Welcome to the Companion Site!
This site is intended to enhance your use of Theory and Practice of Addiction Counseling, First Edition, by Pamela Lassiter and John Culbreth. Please note that all the materials on this site are especially geared toward maximizing your understanding of the material.
This book provides a review of existing theories of addiction to help counselors connect those theories to practice. It takes an approach similar to that used in counseling theories courses by presenting multicultural case studies and will apply each theory to the case throughout the text. Each chapter presents an overview of the theory discussed, a description of treatment applications, reviews its strengths and weaknesses, and provides an overview of the empirical research. Finally, each chapter will contain a section that applies the approach to the cases and boxes with discussion questions and critical thinking. Theories covered in the text include motivational interviewing, moral theory, developmental theory, cognitive behavioral theories, attachment theory, sociological theory, stages of change theory, family systems and harm reduction. A final chapter discusses approaches to relapse prevention.
