Human Growth and Development

Fifth Edition
by Chris Beckett and Hilary Taylor

Questions

  • You have heard two people talking about Jenny, but not Jenny herself. How might Jenny describe her relationship with Stefan and what might she feel about it? How might she see Gloria’s attitude to it? (Imagine that Jenny keeps a diary: what might she say? Try writing her account of this situation. Bear in mind that these are fictional characters and what you write from Jenny’s point of view is every bit as real as what we have written from the point of view of her mother and carer!)
  • Imagine that Jenny found out about the emails between Gloria and her mother. How might she feel about those? (Again, you could do this in the form of a diary entry written in the first person by Jenny.)
  • Suppose Jenny was able-bodied, but had got into a relationship with Stefan. What would be different about the story and why?
  • Suppose you were a friend of Jenny’s and you heard about her relationship with Stefan. How would you feel about it (a) if Jenny had a disability, as described above, as compared to how you would feel if, (b), she did not have a disability?
  • Why do you think Gloria feels as she does? Is there any aspect of her own background (see Case Study F) that is relevant to understanding her concern about Jenny?
