Chapter 13: Transforming numeric data to create descriptive and narrative accounts

Elliott, J. (2005). Using narrative in social research: Qualitative and quantitative approaches. Sage.

Elliott (2005) writes extensively about developing narrative from numeric sources. She also discusses ways of developing causal models from quantitative and narrative data including, for example, seeing the difference between superficial causes and deeper systemic ones. See also other references to Elliott’s work from the chapter text, based on her extensive experience with the various British longitudinal birth cohort datasets.

Waller et al. illustrate a person-centred approach to a combination of panel data with interview data, involving conversion from quantitative data to qualitative (narrative) text.
