Questions to Consider: [Critical thinking questions based on the article to gauge student comprehension and analysis]

  1. Describe some ways that teachers and school structures or practices unintentionally stop learning for students?
  2. Describe an example in the article when teacher’s high expectations were demonstrated through strong critical thinking and higher-order thinking skills.
  3. Delpit writes about her own struggle with a student in her own classroom, and the trouble of tasks when they are “decontextualized and paperbound”. Share your own thinking about how this happens in classrooms and what you could do to prevent it from happening.

Article 2: Gay, G. (2002). Preparing for culturally responsive teaching. Journal of Teacher Education, 53(2), 106-116. DOI: 10.1177/0022487102053002003

Learning Objective: LO 2-3 At the Core of Becoming a Multicultural Educator: A Deep Understanding of Culture

Summary: Based in Gay’s (2000) book, Culturally Responsive Teaching: Theory, Research, and Practice (2000), this article makes a case for improving the school success of ethnically diverse students through culturally responsive teaching and for preparing teachers in pre-service education programs with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to do this.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Describe your own ethnic groups’ cultural values, traditions, communication, learning styles, contributions, and relational patterns.
  2. Name three types of “symbolic curriculum” and ways you could supplement what currently exists to be more culturally responsive.
  3. Describe a cross-cultural misunderstanding you've witnessed within the classroom. What new awareness do you bring to understanding this interaction after reading this article?
