Learning Objectives

By the end of the Chapter 4, you should be able to:

  • Communicate an understanding of the basic principles associated with tests and measurements (e.g. validity, reliability, and norms);
  • Describe the basic issues associated with test administration and interpretation;
  • Recognize issues associated with test bias;
  • Differentiate between standardized and nonstandardized assessment procedures;
  • Describe observation skills and behavioral assessment;
  • Provide an overview of environmental/ecological assessment;
  • Provide an overview of DSM-5;
  • Provide a description of the clinical interview and mental status exam;
  • Discuss treatment planning (including Lazarus’s BASIC ID and Seligman’s DO A CLIENT MAP models); and
  • Discuss multicultural issues relating to diagnosing and treating mental disorders.
