Activity 13.1: Reflective practice

Having read the information regarding interpreting prescriptions can you identify the different types of prescriptions, including paper and electronic and identify the strengths and weaknesses of each of these in relation to your practice placement experiences.

  • Digital or computer-based
  • Paper-based
  • GP-based

Paper based can be difficult to read.

Digital-based prescriptions are usually built into a wider system that communicates directly with other patient record systems such as the patients’ observations and early warning system scoring. This will often prompt nursing staff to respond in a particular way with the main aim of reducing harm to the patient. Remember, you need to use clinical judgement alongside the digital prescriptions/systems.
