Activity 37.3: Research and evidence-based practice

Why do you think people with a mental health condition or a learning disability felt less involved in decisions around their care in an inpatient setting?

There is no correct answer to this question but it is likely that judgements were made by healthcare professionals who believed that people with a mental health condition or a learning disability were not competent to make decisions about their own care and that they knew best. This is about the personal beliefs and values these healthcare professionals hold. Whilst some people may not be involved in decision-making, all patients should be offered the choice. Both mental health and learning disability healthcare has seen a significant change in involving service users in their care and the decisions about their care in recent years with values-based practice being particularly popular in mental health settings.
