Case study 39.1

Describe what you would do when a child is brought to A&E in a breathless state such as this?

The first thing to do is sit them down, calm them and seek help from a more experienced practitioner who can undertake a formal assessment.

How much information do you offer at this early stage?

If the person is not known to you then you are not able to offer much information at all, you can explain that diagnosis tends not to be made when children are under 5 years of age.

Thinking ahead, how do you teach the parents to deal with this situation effectively?

Make sure that the parents understand the importance of early intervention and rather than waiting until a crisis occurs, act early and prevent any potential hazardous situations occurring.
