What’s the evidence 1.1

Why do you think patients may prefer to see a GP rather than a nurse?

This may be because they do not appreciate what nurses can now do or that they can prescribe drugs. Ethnic minority patients and younger patients tend to prefer seeing a GP.

What are the benefits of seeing a nurse rather than a GP?

May get an appointment earlier than with a GP and a longer time slot. Older people tend to prefer seeing a nurse and this may because they can give more time.

How can we ensure that patients have confidence and trust in the nurse when they are given an appointment with a nurse rather than the GP?

Better education to the public of the role of the nurse within GP practices and more information on what nurses can help patients with. This may be through television but also information leaflets in GP surgeries and used of the video screens in GP surgery waiting rooms.
