Chapter 8: The Fundamentals of Care in Nursing Adults

Dorothy is 83 years old and was recently admitted to a care home for respite care as her daughter, who is her main carer, was admitted to hospital for an elective knee replacement.

Dorothy is very well looked after by her daughter and son-in-law and enjoys ‘home comforts’. She feels anxious because her daughter is undergoing surgery but also because she is used to her own routine. Your current practice learning experience is in a care home and your mentor has asked that you welcome Dorothy and complete the necessary documentation in relation to the admissions procedure. What fundamental standards of care will you utilise to underpin Dorothy’s welcome and admission for respite care? (You may wish to consider the Care Quality Commission Standards when formulating your answer).

A proposed response to these questions might include:

  • Care and treatment must be appropriate and reflect Dorothy’s needs and preferences therefore a complete assessment is required
  • Dorothy must be treated with dignity and respect
  • Consent must be obtained for any procedures or care
  • Nutrition and hydration needs must be met
  • Safe care and treatment must be provided
  • Premises and equipment must be clean, secure, suitable and used properly
  • If Dorothy has any complaints these must be appropriately investigated and action taken
