23 Immunological problems

Before you go on a placement where you could be caring for children with immunological problems, it will be helpful for you to:

  • Focus on developing an understanding of the immune system so that any changes can be considered with relevance when nursing children and young people in practice.
  • Take the time to review the current childhood immunisation schedule so that you can review if children you meet in practice are up to date with immunisations.
  • Nurse children in your placement areas admitted due to infection and practise reviewing and developing care plans.
  • Arrange spoke placements in vaccine clinics, immunology clinics and with the Immunology or Infectious Diseases Specialist Nurse.
