The neonatal units each have a variety of experiences to offer.  In addition to a large range of skills and further development of your ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate, the following list provides examples of activities that you can negotiate with the staff to enhance your clinical experience.

Shadow:

• Paediatrician/ANNP to labour ward for resuscitation.
• Paediatrician/ANNP to postnatal ward for discharge examination.
• Neonatal nurse in the intensive care nursery.
• Community neonatal/paediatric nurse.

Attend:

• Perinatal mortality meeting.
• Paediatric/obstetric forum/ward round.
• Social work round/case conference.
• Any ward meetings.  For example: infection round, pre-round teaching meeting, ward rounds in all dependency areas, or surgical meeting.

Visit

• Mother on postnatal ward to assess role of the nurse caring for her baby in the neonatal unit.

Work

• Special care nursery under supervision.
• High dependency nursery under supervision.
• Intensive care nursery under supervision.
