As a student you are not yet accountable to the NMC. However, if you are unable to satisfy or justify your actions while on placement, you could be held to account through reasonable disciplinary measures from your university and/or your NHS Trust.  Each member of the nursing team must be able to demonstrate their accountability for the decisions they make.  As a student nurse this can be achieved in several ways, for example:

• By reading and demonstrating your understanding of The Code (2015).
• Adhering to your university and Trust guidelines.
• Ensuring that you utilise up-to-date protocols which identify and share good practice.

Sanctions that can be imposed by your university and Trust if you work outside your competence could lead to dismissal from your course.
