9 Safeguarding during placements

In order to gain further understanding of the nurse’s role in multi-agency safeguarding of children and young people, you could shadow a community public health visitor, school nurse or Nurse for Looked After Children (LAC).

Here are some useful learning opportunities to help you make the most of developing your safeguarding knowledge whilst on these types of placements:

  • What documentation and reports are required for multi-agency safeguarding meetings?
  • What and when can safeguarding information be shared and not be shared?
  • Look at confidentiality procedures and safe storage of safeguarding information.
  • Read procedures and guidance around consent to share health information about children and young people.
  • Shadow and observe the school nurse, health visitor or LAC nurse conducting health reviews.
  • Observe the health visitor or LAC nurse when conducting a home visit.
  • Accompany the school nurse, health visitor or LAC nurse to a child protection conference.
