It is important that all nurses have a clear understanding of their duties of confidentiality to children and young people. During the course of their work, children and young people’s nurses are often recipients of confidential information. Information provided in the context of the therapeutic relationship can generate complex moral dilemmas. Generally speaking, children enjoy the same right to confidentiality as adults and this should be strictly observed. Any limits to such an obligation should be made clear to the child or young person and this includes keeping confidential information which may lead to a child being harmed. So in Leila’s situation it would be important for the nurses to be clear that they have a duty to pass on information to statutory agencies if they are concerned about her welfare or that of another child or young person. Ideally, this would be in advance of Leila sharing her secret so she does not feel betrayed if she shares something which the nurse cannot keep confidential.
