Chapter 28: Emergency care

Activity 28.1: Potential dangers

What potential dangers might you anticipate in this situation?

Something has caused the man in the cupboard to collapse – you need to be very cautious, he may have banged his head upon something or he may have just fainted, but there may well be noxious chemicals, live electricity or gas leaking in the cupboard and this cause be the cause of his collapse

What clues might you find to potential dangers?

Are there any warning notices on, or around the cupboard.  Look very carefully for other warning signs – can you see anything that would make you think there is live electricity, or can you smell any substances.

How could you manage the dangers presented by this situation?

You must protect yourself at all times.  Make sure that electricity has been turned off and wear protective clothing if there are noxious chemicals.  Only assist a casualty when you are certain you are not putting yourself iin danger.

Activity 28.2: David & Malick

Devise a plan for how you would manage this situation.

You need to assess Malick and find out why he is slumped in the chair.

What would your priorities be?

You would need to follow the Drs ABCDE approach – but as always your priority would be ensuring you are safe.

In addition to the care that you would need to provide for Malick, how would you support David in this situation?

As in any situation, you would support and involve David, as Malicks relative, in the care you provided.  This would depend upon what has happened to Malick, but David would need to be kept informed of Malicks condition and involved in any care as was approrpaite.

What implications, if any, will Malick’s situation have for David’s ongoing care?

Once again, it depends what has happened to Malick but Davids plan of care would need to be adapted to ensure that both he and Malick were looked after.
