Chapter 28: Emergency care

Case study 28.1: Precious

How would you manage this situation?

You need to summon the help of the other members of the mental health team very quickly.  Whilst you are waiting for help keep Precious calm and cover the wound.  You should leave the tooth brush embedded in the wound, you may do more damage by trying to remove it.

What type of pressure would you apply to the wound?

If the wound is bleeding heavily you could apply direct pressure, but make sure that you put pressure around and not on the toothbrush

Could a tourniquet be used safely in this situation? Give the reasons for your answer!

In this situation it would not be possible to apply a tourniquet which didn’t put pressure on the toothbrush, so this would not be appropriate.

Case study 28.2: Ameet

What is your immediate priority in this situation?

Your immediate priority is to ensure you remain safe.  Your priority then is to keep Ameet safe.

What actions should you take to help keep Ameet safe?

You should follow the Drs ABCDE approach.

Should you use the gauze to prevent Ameet from biting his tongue further?

No.  This is not required.  Yu do not put anything in to the mouth of a person who is having a seiure as it is likely that, if you try, you will cause damage to them and they may cause damage to you

What medical care may Ameet need to help terminate his seizure and stabilise his condition?

Ameet may need to be administered medications if his seizure continues.
