Activity 1: Video Interview

Watch this video about children with mental illness and trauma via YouTube and consider the following questions:

  • What are the roles of school social workers?
  • How are school social worker advocates?
  • Research your local school district’s social workers. What are some of the issues school social workers in your district are likely to deal with?

Activity 2: The Education Trust

The Education Trust is a national nonprofit advocacy organization that promotes high academic achievement for all students at all levels, particularly for students of color and low-income students.

  • Select Who We Are, then About Us.  How does the Education Trust carry out its mission?
  • Select What We Do, then Advocacy and Legislative Affairs, then Strong Teachers and Leaders. What are some recent policy actions of the Education Trust?
  • Select Our Resources, then Infographics. Choose one of the Infographics and describe how you might use it as an advocate.   

Activity 3: Stopbullying.gov

Stopbullying.gov is a federal government website managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.

  • Select Bullying, then What is Bullying. What are the three types of bullying? What are two sources of federally collected data on youth bullying?
  • Select Prevention, then Working in the Community. What are some potential partners and community strategies to use to combat bullying?
  • Select Prevention, then Respond to Bullying. What can parents and other adults do to respond?
