Cannulation can be a daunting skill, especially for student nurses as it is very invasive and there are multiple safety aspects to consider. In some areas, this skill may be performed in simulation rather than live. This will depend on the area and health boards/trusts you work with. There will be clear guidelines to follow. Please ensure you are familiar with them. See Chapter 4 for more information.
