“Adaptive Capacity,” Juan Carlos Eichholz, April 5, 2016 (7 min).
Description: This video captures effectively the evolution of organizing over the past 120 years. It suggests the answer to longevity is adaptive capacity--constant adaptation to new challenges as they arise. In reality, very few firms remain constantly at the cutting-edge and “adaptation” occurs when one business fails and a new (more effective) business rises in its place. As such, it is not “adaptive capacity” that should be the primary focus of the organization, but the ability to understand the demands placed on the firm by its collective set of stakeholders (societal expectations) in terms of all phases of the business. The firm best able to interpret the myriad of signals constantly being sent their way will be the ones that succeed in any given period. Nevertheless, this video shows the importance of values to the organization.
