Chapter 11: Analysing Other Forms of Data: Chi-square and Distribution-free Tests

Learning Objectives:

  • Introduce the chi-square test – a statistical test that is used to analyse categorical data.

With this objective in mind, watch the following video

Dr. Herschel Knapp provides an interesting actualisation of the chi-square test.

What does the chi-square test do?

  1. Chi-square compares categorical variables to each other to determine if there's a consistency within the groups.
  2. The chi-square compares two groups of continuous variables to detect statistically significant differences between the groups. It can be used to determine if an experiment worked or not.
  3. Chi-square compares three or more continuous variables to detect statistically significant differences between the groups.
