Ethical Praxis in Digital Social Research

This chapter reviews some of the challenges that are now emerging for the social sciences as they become more computationally intense. The ability to gather and integrate data in large, centralized data warehouses has led to concerns over data confidentiality, security and possible misuse. The ability to ‘e-enable’ just about any kind of device has led to concerns about privacy, intrusiveness and protection of identity. Finally, there are concerns that technologies might be being designed and deployed so as to promote certain kinds of interests and values: technologies have become intrinsically ethical.
