What are your own assumptions about development? Do you believe that a child’s development is determined by their nature and their genes? Do you believe that the environment is what makes a difference, including how caregivers treat their child? Do you believe that a child passes through different, distinct stages in their development? If so, do you believe that these stages are universal: that is, they are the same in every part of the world?

What do you consider to be some of the important transitions in a child’s psychological development? List at least five, and place them in chronological order.
