Journal Article 1: Attema, A. E., Bleichrodt, H., & Wakker, P. P. (2012). A direct method for measuring discounting and QALYs more easily and reliably. Medical Decision Making, 32, 583–593.

This article offers detailed information about the methods used for discounting and calculating quality-adjusted life years (QUALYs), important factors often used in economic evaluations. The authors outline several ways in which QUALYs can be calculated, highlighting some of the limitations of these methods. The authors then propose a new method for calculating QUALYs aimed to address some of the aforementioned shortcomings of other strategies.

Journal Article 2: Leung, H. W. C., Chan, A. L. F., Leung, M. S. H., & Lu, C. (2013). Systematic review and quality assessment of cost-effectiveness analysis of pharmaceutical therapies for advanced colorectal cancer. Annals of Pharmacotherapy, 47, 506–518.

This article provides a systematic review of CEAs of pharmaceutical therapies for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The authors review and assess the quality of the CEAs, offering insights and critiques about their methodologies and results. The authors discuss several methodological flaws found in the 24 CEA studies included in the review.

The aim of this article is to help evaluators learn more about cost-benefit analysis (CBA) by describing its key features and providing an example of CBA using an analysis of a youth-based intervention. The researchers walk through a step-by-step process of conducting a CBA, bringing to life one of the major concepts discussed in Chapter 7 of the textbook.
