Key Points
Education, and teaching in particular, has become increasingly regulated by regional, national and professional agencies. Teachers at all stages on the teaching continuum, from preservice to established, need to keep abreast of evolving expectations and obligations in relation to all aspects of their work, including assessment.
Information from assessment serves a variety of purposes for many different stakeholders with an interest in education. As the key professionals most closely associated with individual students, teachers need to gather and use assessment information within class and to share relevant information with other stakeholders. This chapter identifies a number of key principles that should inform the gathering and use of assessment information about student learning. These recognise the evolving nature of assessment approaches and tools and the increasing usage of digital technologies in and out of school.
