Article 1

Olson, M.A. & Fazio, R.H. (2001). Implicit attitude formation through classical conditioning. Psychological Science, 12, 413-417

Summary:
This article examines whether attitudes towards novel objects can be influenced by classical conditioning. After effectively conditioning either a positive or a negative feeling toward the objects, participants were assessed for their awareness of the pairing procedure.

Discussion Questions:
  1. Using terminology from the text, what was the method of presentation of the CS and US used in some previous studies?
  2. Using terminology from the text, what was the method of presentation of the CS and US used in this study?
  3. Can you imagine how the Pavlovian (classical) conditioning phenomenon described in this study might be happening unintentionally without people’s knowledge?
  4. Given the systematic demonstration of Pavlovian (classical) conditioning of attitudes, how do you think humans should apply this bit of scientific information?

Article 2

Rosen, J. B. (2014). The neurobiology of conditioned and unconditioned fear: A neurobehavioral system analysis of the amygdala. Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience Reviews, 3, 23-41

Summary:
This article reviews work on the amgydala and fear. It describes the roles of different parts of the amygdala in different kinds of fear. It also discussed the implications for understanding normal and pathological fear in humans.

Discussion Questions:
  1. What difference in brain involvement is observed for unconditioned and conditioned fear?
  2. Why is the odor of a predator used to study conditioned fear in rodents?
  3. Is the amygdala involved in human’s phobias? What is the relevance of the amygdala to human anxiety disorders?
