Article 1

Smillie, L. D.  (2013). Extraversion and reward processing. Current Directions in Psychological Science, 22, 167-172

Summary:
This article explores the relationship between personality and sensitivity to reward. In particular, the author reviews the history ideas relating personality features to how individuals process rewarding stimuli. This leads to the distinction in the neurobiological systems involved in different aspects of incentive motivation.

Discussion Questions:
  1. What does the author describe as the appeal that a reward-processing model has for understanding the features associated with extraversion?
  2. What different areas of the brain and different neurotransmitter systems seem to be involved in wanting versus liking?
  3. How are wanting and liking related to extraversion?

Article 2

Gongola, L. C. & Daddario, R.  (2010). A practitioner's guide to implementing a differential reinforcement of other behaviors procedure. TEACHING Exceptional Children, 42, 14-20

Summary:
This article provides and overview of differential reinforcement used with students with disabilities. The authors describe various approaches to differential reinforcement. Then, two case studies illustrated the application of differential reinforcement of other behaviors.

Discussion Questions:
  1. What are the difference among DRI, DRA, DRO, and DRL?
  2. Why do the authors express enthusiasm for DRO?
  3. In the example of momentary DRO, the teacher asks students for what reward they would like to work. Based information covered in chapter 7, why do you think that the teacher would do that?
  4. What is the difference between momentary DRO and whole-interval DRO? When should each be used?
