Article 1: Denzin, N.K. 2014. Reading the Challenges of a Global Community and the Sociological Imagination Qualitative Inquiry.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Denzin recommends researchers must find “new ways of connecting people, and their personal troubles with social justice methodologies”. Given your knowledge on qualitative and quantitative methods, choose a theory that you would use to test a global phenomenon that connects people with the overarching structures of social injustice that exist. What do each of these methods offer the theory (or theories) you have chosen to address this topic.
  2. Discuss the differences between the ethical, operational, intellectual, and advocacy agendas that exist. Is it possible for these things to come together and work together in a global context? Explain why/why not.

Article 2: Egharevba, S. and White, J. Are Finnish Police Racists? A Critical Analysis of Police Cadets' Attitudes towards African Immigrants in Finland. International Journal of Police Science & Management, March 2007; vol. 9, 1: pp. 14-35.

Questions to Consider:

  1. In what ways does this study show the benefits of quantitative inquiry and qualitative inquiry to understanding international policing matters and global perspectives?
  2. Identify the types of policing issues the author attempts to uncover in this study. Why do they have importance in the current political and social climate, globally? What about comparatively to the United States?
