Article 1: Adler, Patricia A. and Peter Adler.  (2007).  “The Demedicalization of Self-Injury: From Psychopathology to Sociological Deviance.”  Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, 36(5): 537-570.

Questions to Consider:

  1. Which terms do the Adlers (2007) reference in terms of cutting, branding, burning, etc.? Which term invokes a more favorable connotation? Explain why this is important to studying the sociology of deviance.
  2.  Historically, has the study of self injury been mostly psychological or sociological? Discuss the treatment approach to self-injury given these two different approaches.

Article 2: Hamm, Mark S.  (2004).  “Apocalyptic Violence: The Seduction of Terrorist Subcultures.” Theoretical Criminology, 8(3): 323-339.

Questions to Consider:

  1. According to Hamm (2004), can the study of violence and deviance benefit from examining the history of societies? Why or why not?
  2.  Which two case studies are used in Hamm’s (2004) work on ethnostatistics and the construction of terrorism? What’s the connection between the two events according to this article?
