Article 1: Donner, C.M. & Jennings, W. (September 2014). Low Self-Control and Police Deviance: Applying Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory to Officer Misconduct. Police Quarterly.

Donner and Jennings (2014) examine a behavioral measure of self-control to evaluate the extent to which low self-control predicts police misconduct in Philadelphia Police Department.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What elements of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s theory of self control are used in the current study? Explain why this is an extension of Hirschi’s social control theory.
  2. What the independent variable? How is it measured? What are the dependent variables? How are they measured?
  3. Explain the practical relevance of the findings from this study for police and organizational deviance studies.

Article 2: Jo, Y. & Zhang, Y. (November 2014). Parenting, Self-Control, and Delinquency: Examining the Applicability of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory of Crime to South Korean Youth. International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology. 58: 1340-1363

Jo & Zhang (2014) examined whether self-control fully mediates the effect of parenting on deviant behavior among South Korean middle and high schools students. This study examines Gottfredson and Hirschi’s general theory of crime, specifically the role of parenting in self-control theory in the context of Asian culture.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What measures of parenting and self control are used in this study? Is there controversy surrounding these measures in previous studies?
  2. Explain the relevance of gender in this study. Why is it important to consider in self control theories?
