Questions to Consider:
- Summarize and explain the contradictory relationship the author examines between the Southern identity and mainstream US culture. Why is that contradiction important?
- What is the utility of the author’s discussion of hegemonic masculinity as it relates to the Southern identity situated in mainstream US culture? What does that help us understand about stereotypes and the identity making process?
- Summarize how levels of analysis examined in this study.

Questions to Consider:
- Lethal violence is intersubjective in that it is co-constructed through the process of social interaction. Explain what this means to the author in relation to homicide.
- Summarize and explain the differences and similarities between rural Southern violence and urban violence.
- Culture can be used as a way to perform a particular identity for a particular audience, and much violent behavior is therefore not a manifestation of a specific moral orientation. What utility does this statement have for those researching using a labeling theory perspective?
