How to extract DNA from a kiwi fruit

This experiment will show you how to extract DNA from a kiwi fruit, the equipment you’ll require to conduct this experiment is:

For the extraction fluid:

  • Half a teaspoon of salt, one third of a cup of water and one tablespoon of detergent
  • Half a kiwi Fruit
  • Sandwich bag
  • Water bath
  • Ice
  • Test tube
  • Funnel
  • Filter paper
  • Pipette
  • Ethanol/Rubbing Alcohol
  • Straw

Method and observations:

  • Place half a kiwi fruit in a sandwich bag
  • Squash the kiwi fruit with your hands
  • Measure out 50ml of DNA extraction solution
  • Pour the solution into the bag with the kiwi fruit
  • Mix the contents together
  • Place the bag in a hot water bath for 15 mins

  • Place a clean test tube in the ice
  • Remove the mixture from the water bath
  • Place a funnel with filter paper into the test tube
  • Pour the mixture into the funnel and wait for the liquid to filter through
  • When enough liquid has gathered, remove the funnel
  • Remove the test tube from the ice and, using a pipette, insert the ethanol
  • Collect the stringy DNA using a stick or straw
