Extracting DNA from a kiwi fruit
How to extract DNA from a kiwi fruit
This experiment will show you how to extract DNA from a kiwi fruit, the equipment you’ll require to conduct this experiment is:
For the extraction fluid:
- Half a teaspoon of salt, one third of a cup of water and one tablespoon of detergent
- Half a kiwi Fruit
- Sandwich bag
- Water bath
- Ice
- Test tube
- Funnel
- Filter paper
- Pipette
- Ethanol/Rubbing Alcohol
- Straw
Method and observations:
- Place half a kiwi fruit in a sandwich bag
- Squash the kiwi fruit with your hands
- Measure out 50ml of DNA extraction solution
- Pour the solution into the bag with the kiwi fruit
- Mix the contents together
- Place the bag in a hot water bath for 15 mins
- Place a clean test tube in the ice
- Remove the mixture from the water bath
- Place a funnel with filter paper into the test tube
- Pour the mixture into the funnel and wait for the liquid to filter through
- When enough liquid has gathered, remove the funnel
- Remove the test tube from the ice and, using a pipette, insert the ethanol
- Collect the stringy DNA using a stick or straw
