Activist/organization profiles

  1. The National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network is a healing justice organization that works to transform mental health for queer and trans people of color. Launched in May 2016, the network has quickly grown into a community of care, resource sharing, connection and learning. They provide a space for queer and trans people of color committed to improving mental health for their communities.

  2. SAGE is a national advocacy and services organization that’s been looking out for LGBT elders since 1978. Through their work, they aim to build welcoming communities and keep issues related to LGBT aging in the national conversation to ensure a fulfilling future for all LGBT people.

  3. The Icarus Project is a support network and education project by and for people who experience the world in ways that are often diagnosed as mental illness. They advance social justice by fostering mutual aid practices that reconnect healing and collective liberation.

  2. When Medical Providers Give Sex to Trans and Intersex People (Gender & Society, May 2016) Sociologist Georgiann Davis and colleagues examine how medical providers are quick to fix intersex individuals but are slower to assist transgender individuals.

  4. The Autistic, Non-binary, Queer, Law Student Fighting for Disability Justice (News@Northeastern, April 2018) This article profiles the work of Lydia X. Z. Brown, who examines the manifestations of ableism, the differences between disability rights and disability justice, and the intersecting points between racism, ableism, transphobia, and other forms of oppression.

This report utilizes data from state-level, population-based surveys to estimate the proportion of the population that identifies as transgender by age group, starting at age 13.
