Our world

Subject area: Geography; PSHE

Lesson number: 1 of 3

Suitable age range: 10–11 years (Y6)

Resources needed: Computers, atlases, poster paper, pens

Expected timings: 2 hours

Expected outcomes of the activity: Pupils will be able to: a) understand some of the implications of the distribution of natural resources including food and water (Ge2/1.3b); and b) understand how a changing global climate is affecting food and water sources and leading to famine and drought.

Details of the activity:

Working in pairs or small groups, children should research online an area of the world where there is famine or drought. Use an atlas to locate that area then draw up a poster stating where the country is and what the human consequences are, or could be, of the changes in climate. Present the posters to each other.

Follow up lessons: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that we all have the right to life, and to live in freedom and safety (Article 3). It states that if we are frightened or badly treated in our own country we have the right to run away to another country to be safe (Article 14).

Children divide into two groups. One group draws up a case to support the principle that people have the right to seek a better life if their country of birth, through famine, drought or war, is no longer able to sustain them or keep them safe and healthy. The other group draws up a case which demonstrates the problems which might arise when huge numbers of people seek refuge in more wealthy countries. Each group then presents their findings and debates with the other.
