About the Authors
Dr Sean MacBlain is Reader in Child Development and Disability at the University of St Mark & St John, Plymouth and was previously research lead for the Centre for Professional and Educational Research. Prior to working at the University of St Mark & St John, Sean worked as a Senior Lecturer in Education and Developmental Psychology at Stranmillis University College, a College of Queen’s University Belfast. Sean has also worked as an educational psychologist and continues in this field in his own private practice SMB Associates SW Ltd (firstname.lastname@example.org). Other publications by Sean include: Gray and MacBlain (2015) Learning Theories in Childhood now in its 2nd edition; MacBlain, Long and Dunn, (2015) Dyslexia, Literacy and Inclusion: Child-centred Perspectives; MacBlain (2014) How Children Learn. Sean’s research interests include the professional development of teachers and early years practitioners and the social and emotional development of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Sean is married to Angela and lives in Somerset, England.
Dr Jill Dunn is a senior lecturer in Stranmillis University College, Belfast. She was a primary school teacher working in early years classrooms before moving into teacher education. Jill teaches across the BEd, MEd and PGCE Early Years programmes and her main interests lie in the teaching of literacy in the early years and in working with parents. Jill completed her EdD in 2013 and her dissertation focused on children’s views on the use of popular culture to teach writing. She has been involved in a number of funded research projects on literacy and on digital technology in the early years. She has presented her work at conference and published articles in Literacy and the International Journal of Early Years Education among others. She is co-author of the recent book Dyslexia, Literacy and Inclusion: Child-centred Perspectives. She lives with her husband Ian and daughters Holly and Katy in Northern Ireland.
Dr Ian Luke is Dean of Faculty: Education & Social Sciences at the University of St Mark & St John, Plymouth. Ian has worked in schools and universities across the United Kingdom, and has also taught internationally. Prior to working at University of St Mark & St John he was based at the University of Bath. His research interests include metacognition, disability, professional development, higher education and teacher education. Ian has a strong sporting background in sports acrobatics, winning both World and European medals. Ian lives with his partner Sophie and their five children in Tavistock, Devon.
