Doing Research in Counselling and Psychotherapy
Fourth Edition
Developing Your Research Question
Identifying a research question is an important, and often highly challenging, stage in any research project. There are two main decisions that need to be made:
- deciding on a topic
- narrowing the topic down to a researchable question or set of questions
Learning activities that may be valuable are:
- Keeping a research journal– this is an essential part of any research process.
- Visually mapping each possible research idea to develop a more detailed appreciation of what it might entail.
- Opening your ideas for reactions and feedback from others.
- Using your imagination. Sociologist David Gauntlett regularly writes about the role of imagination in research.
