Discussion Questions

  1. Counselors make many ethical judgments throughout the day.  Based on what you know now, what are the most important things a counselor can do while working through an ethical dilemma?
  2. As a counselor, we must actively show cultural sensitivity in all aspects of the therapeutic relationship.  Is it necessary for a counselor minimize the impact their values pay in the therapeutic relationship?  Why or why not?  If so, how could a counselor go about this process?
  3. A counselor cannot come to the therapeutic relationship “value-free” or neutral.  How might you work with a client ethically when there are stark personal differences between you and the client?  Is it okay to “refer out”?  Why or why not?  What are the ethical implications?
