Sage is a member of the International Association of STM Publishers and is a signatory to the STM Permissions Guidelines.                           

  • This allows Sage authors to use, in a limited capacity, content published by other signatories of the Guidelines within their Sage publication. 
  • These guidelines apply to ALL works published by a signatory – not just STM works. 
  • The material used within these guidelines does not require permission and may be used at no cost, but it may require notification.
    • If notification is required, follow the instructions provided by the publisher
    • The permission log should be updated with the details of the notification and a copy of the submitted notification should be included in the permissions file.
  • If a publisher has any exceptions to the policy, it will be indicated on the signatory chart available on the STM website.

Be sure to request permission for all material in excess of the permitted amount or beyond the allowed uses.

Allowed Uses

The STM Guidelines allow the following uses, without permission from the copyright holder:

Figures/Tables for use within a journal or book:

Use up to three (3) figures/tables/images from a journal article or book chapter, subject to the following limits:

  • A maximum total of five (5) figures/tables/images from a single book or journal issue/edition;

  • A maximum total of six (6) figures/tables/images from an annual journal volume;

  • A maximum total of three (3) figures/tables/images from works published by a single signatory for use in any given article or book chapter; and,

  • A maximum total of thirty (30) figures from a single signatory for use in any given book, including a multi-volume book with different authors per chapter.

Text Quotes for use in a journal or book:

Use a maximum of 400 words from a journal article or book chapter, subject to the following limit:

  • A maximum total of 800 words from a single book or journal issue/edition.

Uses not permitted (as of January 1, 2021)

Cover and Promotional use 

  • Use for promotional purposes, including cover use, is not permitted.

Ancillary and supplemental works

  • Use within ancillary and/or supplemental works is not covered by the STM Permissions Guidelines.

  • Permission is required for these the following uses:

    • Interactive works which are not part of the primary work
    • Standalone digital platforms which can be sold as a subscription and are not part of the primary work
    • Image galleries distributed to instructors.
    • Enhanced works which are published separately from the primary work   
    • Regional editions/custom editions or publications (adapted or modified for a single market)
    • Abridgments (short editions or mini-books) published separately from the primary work  
    • Learning management systems (online courses) published as an additional resource to the primary work
    • Applications or PowerPoint presentations published as an additional resource to the primary work  
    • Solutions manuals published as an additional resource to the primary work
    • Study workbooks, online lectures, and guides published as an additional resource to the primary work
  • Do not include this content within these ancillary and supplemental works if possible or clear permission.
