Motivational Interviewing in the Health Care Setting

Craig A. Johnston and Brian E. Stevens

This article discusses how motivational interviewing provides health care providers with the appropriate tools to treat individuals who are resistant to change and can help with long-term lifestyle and behavioral changes. 1. The core of MI is expressing empathy and understanding. When a health care provider expresses empathy, how does this impact the patient-provider relationship?
  2. Why should health care providers explore behaviors with patients that may have negative consequences?
  3. When resistance is experienced by the patient, how should health care providers respond?
