The issue of equality is a significant one for social work and for the public sector bodies in which much social work is delivered. Under section 149 of the Equality Act 2010 a public sector equality duty was imposed, which requires public authorities to have due regard to a number of equality considerations when exercising their functions. In taking legislative duties forward it is frequently necessary to bridge the actual wording of an Act with the processes by which this is carried out. The link below will take you to a UK Parliament Research Briefing – The Public Sector Equality Duty and Equality Impact Assessments – prepared by D. Pyper in 2015.

Reading this document will enable you to get to grips not only with the equality duty but also with the types of debates which take place when moving from written law to the exercise of law in practice.
