The personalisation agenda in social work and social care has very much brought to the fore a focus on outcomes for service users and carers. The Joint Improvement Team has undertaken substantial work in this area, which they have called the Talking Points Approach. The following link will take you to the JIT website and enable you to access the Talking Points: Practical Guide by Cook and Miller (October 2012).

Take some time to read over the Practical Guide document, in particular look at Chapter 1, which provides background information, and Chapter 2, which discusses outcomes focused engagement.

Consider what implications this approach to engagement has for your work with service users/carers; how you might be able to have more effective ‘outcomes focused conversations’ and how such an approach can assist in evaluation of work with individuals and families.
