Case Study with Activity – The needs of and challenges for parents/carers who have a child with a learning disability

For any parent the birth of a child has a major impact and requires both psychological and practical adjustment in all areas of life. Parents who have a baby with a disability face additional challenges. In this activity we would like you to think about what some of those challenges are and how parents can be supported more effectively. A commentary is provided at the end of this section to assist in developing your understanding.

  • Take some time to think about what additional challenges there might be for parents with a baby with a disability? Make some notes on the issues you identify.
  • Then, consider how parents can be supported more effectively, both by social workers and other professionals.
  • Lastly, consider what might be the potential impact of a child’s learning disability on parent-child attachment?
