This chapter explores the tricky relationship between power and knowledge in the action research process. It is a useful introduction to theories of power as they relate to the types of knowledge generated in AR projects; particularly as AR approaches become mainstreamed and adopted by large institutions.

his chapter describes a study on social change leadership where the authors incorporated participatory processes and practices into a qualitative research design which they describe as a ‘hybrid’ model. The chapter explores the opportunities and tensions of ‘blending’ research approaches and the impact on the type of knowledge produced.

Both chapters help the reader locate the epistemological position and challenges of participatory action research.
