Extended Reading

The following list of journal articles and books provide extended reading on topics covered in chapter 8 in the second edition. Please note that journal articles are free to access, whereas book extracts (denoted by methods.sagepub.com URLs) require your university to have a subscription to SAGE Research Methods.

Gaventa, J., & Cornwall, A. (2008). Power and knowledge. In P. Reason & H. Bradbury (Eds.), The SAGE handbook of action research. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.
This chapter explores the tricky relationship between power and knowledge in the action research process. It is a useful introduction to theories of power as they relate to the types of knowledge generated in AR projects; particularly as AR approaches become mainstreamed and adopted by large institutions.

Ospina, S., Dodge, J., Foldy, E. G., & Hofmann-Pinil, A. (2008). Taking the action turn: Lessons from bringing participation to qualitative research. In P. Reason & H. Bradbury (Eds.), The SAGE handbook of action research. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.
his chapter describes a study on social change leadership where the authors incorporated participatory processes and practices into a qualitative research design which they describe as a ‘hybrid’ model. The chapter explores the opportunities and tensions of ‘blending’ research approaches and the impact on the type of knowledge produced.

Both chapters help the reader locate the epistemological position and challenges of participatory action research.
