Applied Helping Skills
Chapter Summary
We hope you have acquired some useful tools for your adventure as a therapist. In the process, we also hope that we haven’t overwhelmed you too much, although we know you must be feeling a little anxious. Your anxiety is good. It simply indicates that you care enough to do well and will work to improve on this foundation you are building. Trust your professors (at least the ones who are trustworthy). Trust your supervisors. Listen well and try what they suggest. Students who are open to supervision and who are open to personal and professional change will surely grow. And get into therapy. You will have the opportunity to experience what it is like, you will also learn what you would like to do or not do when in the role of therapist, and most important, you will work on yourself, your person, which is a critical element in building the relationship with clients. We wish you the best in transforming lives!
