Support from SAGE Research Methods

Chapter 11 focused largely on the analysis of interview data. The same principles apply to analysing data in the form of fieldnotes. For an example of fieldnotes, with some notes on how they can be used by the ethnographer, download this dataset from Katie Fitzpatrick, generated from her study of health promotion lessons in a New Zealand school: https://methods.sagepub.com/dataset/srmpromo/PDuI8U/critical-ethnography-schools

Look at the three short extracts from her fieldnotes and think about what different methods of analysis would bring to these: discourse analysis, grounded theory, narrative. Katie Fitzpatrick used them to explore power, and she discusses the importance of writing ethnography as narrative, and taking context into account.
