Support from SAGE Research Methods

In Chapter 5 we noted that vignettes could be a useful aid in interviews to look at people’s accounts of sensitive issues. This extract from a data set generated by Dr Lindsay O’Dell and colleagues shows how a vignette was used to talk to a young carer (‘Louise’) about their experiences of caring for a disabled parent: read this to notice how referring to the person in the vignette enabled the interviewer to ask about issues that might be difficult to ask directly: https://methods.sagepub.com/dataset/srmpromo/PDuI8U/vignette-methodology

Look at the researchers’ account of how they analysed these data, playing close attention to how ‘Louise’ moves between identifying with the person in the vignette and a generalized other and contradictions between these positions.
